National Natural Momunemt and National Nature Reservation in Moravia - Silesian Region

Kaluža National Nature Reserve

Basic information

Kaluža National Nature Reserve lies on the right bank of the Moravice river near Lesní Albrechtice village at the altutide of 320 to 482 metres above the sea level. This area, covering 57,03 hectares, has been protected since 1969. The subject of protection is vegetation of natural flowering beech trees and scree forests typical for the Oder Hills.

Matters of interest

Kaluža NNR is covered mostly by the original old and middle age beech vegetation (places with undergrowth). The proportion of spruce is small (about 5–15%), fir is totally absent. Forestry interventions aim at gradual elimination of spruce, supporting natural regeneration of beechwoods and other deciduous trees, and at preservation of dead trees. Drying spruce trees are gradually removed and firs are planted in their places. We can find here endangered Dentaria enneaphyllos and the endangered and by law protected Martagon Lilly Lilium martagon. Beetles, such as Dorcus parallelopipedus, Cetonia aurata, Potosia cuprea, Gnorimus nobilis, Trichius fasciatus, Tillus elongatus, the Cardinal Beetles Pyrochroa coccinea and Schizotus pectinicornis can be found on dead trunks of old deciduous trees, especially beeches. At the meadows near the Moravice river, under the protected area, there were found rare butterfly species – the endangered Scarce Large Blue Maculinea teleius and the Purple-Shot Copper Lycaena alciphron. The Fire Salamander Salamandra salamandra lives and reproduces in this area, too.
