Lomnice nad Popelkou

Lomnice nad Popelkou, a town with 6.000 inhabitants, lies on average 478 m above sea level. The summer- and winter resort lie in an attractive area under the Tábor hill (678 m a.s.l.) in wide valley of the small river Popelka, in the border between the Bohemian paradise and Krkonoše. The town was mentioned already in the Dalimil's chronicle in the year 1232. In the beginning of 19th century started traditional production of famous Lomnice biscuits (including „kulatky“) and wafers. At present the city offers to its visitors many sport- and cultural activities (Tyl's theatre, cinema, castle, city museum and gallery, puppet theatre, sports hall, ice arena, stadium, climbing wall, Ski area „V Popelkách“ with accessible outlook-gallery on the K – 70 ski jump, Allain's tower, sports airport, lido, spa house and others). Buildings of vernacular architecture (the urban conservation area Karlov, log houses, woody bell tower), and historical, clerical and cultural monuments are typical for the city and its surroundings. A dense network of tourist-, cycle- and ski routes in the scenic surroundings of the city makes it possible to visit many interesting tourist sights, e.g. a lookout tower, restaurant or seasonal information centre on the hill Tábor, ruins of the castles Kumburk and Bradlec, or the Smetana's outlook. The lovers of nature and of geology will be surely pleased with the natural sights Jezírko pod Táborem and Cidlinský hřeben. The area Kozlov-Tábor was declared Europe's significant locality.
