Nature reserve Moravian

Karlovice Nature Reserve - North

Basic information

The reserve is situated on a slope with a south and southeast exposition 2 km northwest up from Karlovice Municipality. The site represents a natural fir-beech forest with autochthonous larch species. It was declared a nature reserve in the area of 42.35 ha in 1970.

Subject of protection

The subject of protection concerns a well-preserved natural fir-beech forest with autochthonous larch, abundant fir species, incidental sycamore and wych elm.

Living nature

Genetically valuable Polish Larch (Larix decidua subsp. polonica) grows mainly in the central part of the reserve. The whole reserve has been fenced since 1995. The aim of the fencing is to prevent the damage caused by browsing. As a consequence, some woody species started to rejuvenate naturally here, in particular the Common Beech (Fagus sylvatica), European silver fir (Abies alba) as well as Norway spruce (Picea abies). Most of the reserve is covered by a flowery beech stand with the following characteristic species: Dog's Mercury (Mercurialis perennis), Woodruff (Galium odoratum), Dentaria bulbifera, Festuca altissima, Milium effusum), (Senecio ovatus) and (Galeobdolon montanum).
