Nature reserve Moravian

Hvozdnice Nature Reserve 2

Basic information

The site consists of meandering watercourse which here and there reveals bedrock. Local lake, peat bog and alluvial forest communities rich in species provide refuge to many bird and amphibian species. The site was declared a nature reserve in the area of 56.24 ha in 1989.

Subject of protection

The subject of protection comprises marsh ecosystems including Slavkov pond system in the alluvial plain of Hvozdnice creek and Hvozdnice meanders together with the outcrops of seat rocks and Pleistocene sediments. Fossilized remains of invertebrates (in particular the shells of cephalopods and pelecypod) as well as Lower Carboniferous plant species can be found in the silty clay. Bedrock can be seen at some parts of the stream bed. Aqueous glacial sediments – deposits of glacial streams and lakes – are part of the former sand pit which is situated in the reserve.

Fauna

Rare animal species grow in marsh meadows along Hvozdnice. The site is a great place for the reproducion of some endangered amphibians such as Smooth Newt (Triturus vulgaris), Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus), European Fire-bellied Toad (Bobmbina bombina), True Toad (Bufo bufo), Pool Frog (Rana lessonae), Edible Frog (Rana esculenta), Agile Frog (Rana dalmatina) and Marsh Frog (Rana ridibunda). The following species were spotted in the area: European Tree Frog (Hyla arborea) and European Green Toad (Bufo viridis). The site is a popular nesting place for Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), Corn Crake (Crex crex) and Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus). Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus) occasionally nest in here, too.
