Věřňovice Natural Monument
Basic information
Most of the site is covered by alluvial forests. The natural species composition was disturbed by plantings of invasive species, for example the Northern red oak (Quercus rubra), on several places. The natural monument was declared in 1989, now it extends in the area of 4.59 ha.
Subject of protection
Almost native alluvial forest stands located on an important river terrace with many endangered plant and animal species.
Living nature
There is an abundant population of Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis), a significant and regionally scarce species growing in the area. Occasionally, we can notice Spring snowflake (Leucojum vernum) here. Herb layer comprises some Carpathian species such as Isopyrum thalictroides. From the forest protection point of view, an important feature is a shrubby coat with dominant Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) at the site´s periphery. Thermophilic flora grows in dry grasslands. In this region there are the following species are quite rare: Common Milkwort (Polygala vulgaris), Fairy Flax (Linum catharticum), European centaury (Centaurium erythraea), Tuberous Pea (Lathyrus tuberosus), Oregano (Origanum vulgare) and Wild Garlic (Allium vineale).
