Natural monuments Moravian
Site of Community Importance Staré hliniště
Basic information
The site consists of a terraced recessed mineshaft of an abandoned clay pit. On average it is 4 metres deep with steep slopes surrounding it.
Subject of protection
Endangered Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus) is the subject of protection in this site. Its biotopes are declining in numbers as a result of changes in landscape water regime which include drainage of meadows and forests, creep regulation and laying pipes in place of little streams, turning meadows into forests, soil improvement, agricultural chemicalisation and similar activities. Last but not least, its biotopes suffer from car industry, elimination of smaller water areas in landscape (communal waste filling, recultivation etc.), unfriendly fish pond farming (high fish stocks) and fish stocking in quarry lakes and sandpits. Another cause of decline or extinction of this species population is water quality deterioration. In general, newt species suffer from their natural biotope disappearance and intrusion.
Amphibians and reptiles
The site of Staré Hliniště provides particularly great living conditions for many amphibian and reptile species. Here we can find Smooth Newt (Triturus vulgaris), Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus) and Alpine Newt (Triturus alpestris), Earasian Green Toad (Bufo viridis) and Common Toad (Bufo bufo), Yellow-bellied Toad (Bombina variegata) and Fire-bellied Toad (Bombina bombina), European Tree Frog (Hyla arborea), Grass Snake (Natrix natrix), Common Viper (Vipera berus) and Sand Lizzard (Lacerta agilis).
