Natural Monument Staré hliniště
Basic information
The site consists of a terraced recessed mineshaft in an abandoned clay pit. On average, the mineshaft is 4 metres deep with steep slopes surrounding it. There are several water areas on its bottom. The site was declared a natural monument in the area of 4.39 in 1989.
Subject of protection
Water areas in a terraced recessed mineshaft in an abandoned clay pit settled by endangered amphibian and reptile species. The vegetation undergoes a spontaneous succession development.
Living nature
Thanks to its rich topography, the former clay pit comprises vegetation of various succession levels. After the closure of the brick clay pit in the fifties of the last century, so-called pioneer woody species such as Silver Birch (Betula pendula) and Common Aspen (Populus tremula) spread in this area. In moist parts it was for example Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) and Goat Willow (Salix caprea). Some endangered species find great conditions in a slightly shaded environment such as Lesser Butterfly-orchid (Platanthera bifolia) and Martagon (Lilium martagon). In close vicinity of water areas we can find Yellow Iris (Iris pseudacorus). In meadows we can regularly watch blooming Dactylorhiza longebracteata and White Helleborine (Cephalanthera damasonium). The site is used for study purposes by the Environmental education centre in Krnov. For the abundant occurrence of Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus) the site was included in the list of the sites of Community importance.
