Natural Monument Old River

Basic information

The site represents a fragment of formerly meandering Lučina River and remains of soft meadow in a birch forest. The site is a unique peat bog far and wide which is an important refuge for endangered and severely endangered amphibians and reptiles. The site was declared a natural monument in the area of 1.42 ha in the year 2002.

Subject of protection

Idle Lučina meander, a refuge for many specially protected animal species, amphibians in particular.

Living nature

There are many species living in a rather small area: Smooth Newt (Triturus vulgaris), Alpine Newt (Triturus alpestris) i Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus), Common Toad (Bufo bufo), Common Frog (Rana temporaria), Pool Frog (Rana lessonae) and Edible Frog (Rana esculenta), Yellow-Bellied Toad (Bombina variegata), Grass Snake (Natrix natrix) and Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis). Out of the bird species visiting the area special attention should be paid to Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea).
