Natural Monument of Picrit Almond Stones at Kojetín

Basic information

It is a geological phenomenon that was revealed during ground works when digging a slot for local road between Kojetín and Straník. The site was declared a natural monument in the area of 0.23 ha in 1997.

Subject of protection

The motif of protection is geological. It concerns the conservation of one type of undersea volcanic activity in the period of lower chalk. So-called "picrit almond-stone“ originated here. The walls of a former quarry reveal Tesin formations of undersea lava extrusion along both sides of the road. Tesin formations are alkaline, ultrabasic magmatite with highly variable mineralogical and chemical composition. The local lavas can be classified as porphyritic picrits which are characteristic for their dominant augit contents, high amounts of olivine and small amounts of feldspar.
