Natural Monument Otická Volcano
General Information
The basis of the Natural Monument Otická Volcano is the remains of a volcano from the Early Miocene. It´s age was assessed by the scientists to 20 million years. The outcrop from the original volcano is a basalt rock and was discovered at the top of the quarry at Kamenná Mountain. This area was declared a nature monument in 1991 on the area of 10,44 ha.
Subject of Protection
The protection of the Tertiary basalt igneous and glacier deposits.
Geology
Kamenná Mountain is a moderate hill built by Culm rocks (mainly by greywackes) of the Moravian formation. It´s core is pierced by a neo-vulcanite body. The local basalt rock is much older than in other volcanic rocks, for example in Bruntál region. It´s age was radiometrically assessed to 20 million years. This age corresponds to the today´s volcano relief, panned significantly by denudation and formed by later processes. The apicle crater did not rise by natural forces but by quarry mining in the first half of the 20th century. Tha quarry was established in 1890 and in 1949 it was deserted already.
