Natural Monument Meanders of Lučina River
Basic information
A protected area includes the alluvial plain Lučina River in the length of 2 km. A biotope of numerous endangered species exists here. The site was declared a natural monument in the area of 40.65 ha in 1991.
Subject of protection
The subject of protection here is Lučina River, the non-regulated watercourse with plenty of river meanders created over decades in several metre-long sediment loads, and its peat bogs or little ponds. Thanks to the strong riverbed-forming process, rippings or gravely little islands are created on the River.
Living nature
Herb layer is the most diverse in the spring when we can easily see some flowers in their full bloom, for example Yellow Anemone (Anemone ranunculoides), Yellow Star of Bethlehem (Gagea lutea) or True Oxlip (Primula elatior). On the contrary, Moschatel (Adoxa moschatelina), an endangered species recorded on the red list in the northeast part of Moravia-Silesia, is hardly noticeable Peat bogs are natural biotopes of Smooth Newt (Triturus vulgaris), European Green Toad (Bufo viridis), Common Toad (Bufo bufo) and Edible Frog (Rana esculenta). Cavities of old trees are home for Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) and Short-toed Treecreeper (Certhia brachydactyla).
