Natural Monument Boundary Meanders of Odra River 1
Basic information
The natural monument comprises a meandering bed of Odra River. The flow rate of the upper part of Odra River is characteristic for its strong volatility and frequent floods during which the area is regularly flooded and the direction and nature of the river bed radically changes. The site was declared a natural monument in the area of 126.36 ha in 1996.
Subject of protection
The nature protection here concerns a well-preserved part of meandering Odra River at the Czech-Polish border from its confluence with Olše River all the way to Starý Bohumín, in the total distance of 7km, and the native alluvial stands, permanent as well as periodical water areas including a number of rare plant and animal species dependent on this type of biotopes.
Living nature
Odra riverbed with its dynamic development and well-preserved willow-poplar alluvial forests of different age running along its banks is a biotope for a number of significant species. Old alluvial stands are home for rare beetles – Cucuid Beetle (Cucujus cinnaberinus) and Russian Leather Beetle (Osmoderme eremita). Waterlogged areas, permanent or periodical pools are refuge of many amphibians, for example Yellow-Bellied Toad (Bombina variegata), Smooth Newt (Triturus vulgaris), European Tree Frog (Hyla arborea), Edible Frog (Rana esculenta) and Marsh Frog (Rana ridibunda). The natural monument area has been added to the list of sites of Community importance within the network of NATURA 2000. It is included in Meanders of Dolní Odra River Site and is part of Special Protected Area Heřmanský stav – Odra – Poolší.
