Hranečník Natural Monument

Basic information

The natural monument is comprised of a mixed forest with dominant Scotch pine stands which are a nesting place for several dozens of Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea). It was declared a natural monument in the area of 4.93 ha in 1990.

Subject of protection

The nature protection in this area is focused on colonies of in Moravia quite rare Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), a species with special demands on the character of its nesting place.

Living nature

The old mixed forest is dominated by Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris) with the admixture of Norway Spruce (Picea abies), Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur), Common Beech (Fagus sylvatica) and Polish Larch (Larix decidua). Herb layer mainly consists of Black Elder (Sambucus nigra), Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa) and European Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia). Local pines grow to quite a large size here. Thanks to their large 1.5 ha-long continuous stands, there were suitable conditions for creation of a large viable colony of Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea). This site is also a nesting place for one pair of Common Raven (Corvus corax).
