Natural Monument Heraltický potok
Basic information
The site represents an alluvial plain of Heraltický potok (creek). Former ponds turned into regularly flooded alluvial meadows. The site was declared a natural monument in the area of 14.39 ha in 1991.
Subject of protection
Meandering watercourse with cut-off meanders and regularly flooded alluvial meadows. It is a site with diverse vertebrate species.
Living nature
Fig Buttercup (Ficaria bulbifera), Yellow Star of Bethlehem (Gagea lutea) and Greek Crested Lark (Corydalis cava) stand out in the spring aspect. Other characteristic species of the local forests are for example Lesser Pond Sedge (Carex acutiformis), Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), Reed Mannagrass (Glyceria maxima), Common Hop (Humulus lupulus), Meadow Starwort (Stellaria palustris) and others. Local small pools are suitable for reproduction of many amphibians, for example Smooth Newt (Triturus cristatus), (Triturus vulgaris) and European Tree Frog (Hyla arborea). Moist meadows with dense vegetation are home for Viviparous Lizard (Zootoca vivipara) and Grass Snake (Natrix natrix). The area of the natural monument is a nesting place for several couples of Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), Eurasian Hobby (Falco subbuteo), Corn Crake (Crex crex) and Spotted Crake (Porzana porzana). Reedy stands provide refuge to four warbler species (Acrocephalus sp.), River Warbler (Locustella fluviatilis), Grasshopper Warbler (Locustella naevia) and Common Reed-bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus). Common Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus) was spotted here.
