Sovinecko Natural Park 2
Basic information
Sovinecko Natural Park is situated in the south-western part of Rešov highlands. Its visitors can be charmed by its deep valleys and dominant slopes covered by forests whose species composition is similar to natural stands. The landscape surrounding the local villages has been highly deforested since the first settlements, especially in shallow valleys of the upper parts of the flows. However, dense forests are growing on steep slopes of cut valleys. You can still find traces of iron ore, silver, gold and other minerals mining in the natural park´s territory. Quite specific and interesting karst structures occur in the vicinity of Sovinec.
Castle of Sovinec
The largest castle complex in Bruntál region was founded by Hrutovic dynasty before the year 1348. It became an important Hussite stronghold during Hussite wars. In 1543 it was purchased by lords of Boskovice who rebuilt it into a renaissance residence. Large construction works continued even in the era of Vavřinec Eder of Štiavnice who owned the castle from 1578 and his son-in-law, the castle´s last Czech owner Jan Kobylka of Kobylí (till 1592). After the defeat in the Battle of the White Mountain in 1623 the castle passed into the ownership of German Knights Templar. An order seminar was established here in the forties of the 19th century and a school of forestry in the year 1867. French prisoners of war were held in the castle during the World War II. The castle, which burnt out in 1945, is currently under gradual reconstruction. The first three and the seventh courtyards are open for castle´s visitors as well as the so called Upper castle (the oldest part of the castle) with a watching tower and the view of beautiful landscape of Sovinec Natural Park.
