Sovinecko Natural Park 1
Basic information
Sovinecko Natural Park is situated in the south-western part of Rešov highlands. Its visitors can be charmed by its deep valleys and dominant slopes covered by forests whose species composition is similar to that of natural stands. The landscape surrounding the local villages has been highly deforested since the first settlements, especially in shallow valleys of the upper parts of the water flows. However, dense forests are growing on steep slopes of cut valleys. You can still find traces of iron ore, silver, gold and other minerals mining in the natural park´s territory. Quite specific and interesting karst structures occur in the vicinity of Sovinec.
Characteristic
Oskava and Teplička brooks meander through the park. So does Huntava and Sitka brook whose inaccessible hillsides and rock scarps are covered with firs and elms. Little natural treasures – preserved complexes of acid beechwoods – occur in slopes in Oskava valley. The natural park is a nesting place for 129 bird species among which the eagle owl (Bubo bubo), nowadays a rare species, reigns. From here you can also set off for the national natural monument Waterfalls of Rešov which are clenched by the pass of Huntava brook. The waterfalls have been protected since 1966. Little villages with interesting mining history are spread throughout the park area.
