Ruin of Vikštejn 2

It is quite understandable that a castle with such a rich and romantic history was wrapped in countless legends which remained preserved thanks to folk tradition. It is said that a well-known German minnesänger Walter von der Vogelweide (a lyrical poet) once paid a visit to Vítek of Kravaře, the founder of the castle. For this guest a monument was erected in front of the castle in 1930. Occasional archaeological excavations have been taking place at the castle´s premises since the last century. According to R. Sakrejda (1933), a natural history researcher, there were coins found in the castle already in 1856, followed by spurs, residues of horse harnesses, weapons, lockers, nails, weights, blacksmith´s instruments and tiles of various colours and patterns burnt in them (dating back to the 15th – 17th century). Human bones were found in the cellar under the big tower and even a woman´s skeleton in a secret arching (being probably walled-up). Unfortunately, these finds did not remain preserved to this day. The ruins of the castle were fully renovated in the seventies of the 20th century and they are now open to public.
