Otická Volcano Nature Monument

Otická Volcano, sometimes also called Opavian Volcano, is situated nearby Otice on a terrain elevation known as Kamenná Mountain. It is a typical example of a locality created by an affusion of Tertiary basalt. It is an important archeological and geological locality.

Stone quarrying took place here, producing gravel and sand in the years from 1880 until 1949 with some breaks. We have to add for the whole that except from basalt and sand, also clay was mined under the Kamenná Mountain. A small house and a wind-mill stood at the top of the mountain, in 1917 the house was destroyed and in 1920 even the mill. Only a hut remained here. It´s inhabitants had to leave this place after 1938 because the German army established a military gound here.

From 1951 onwards was this place called Opavian volcano and regular motorcycle racing took place here. Many spectacles came from far and near. This race was declared the Czechoslovak championship in 1962.

The slopes of Kamenná Mountain with the area of 10,44 ha were declared a natural monument under the name Otická Volcano in 1991.
