Field Ecosystem
Opava district is a very important agriculture area, mainly thanks to loess deposits, blown here by the northern winds in the ice ages. Loess is very rich at minerals and it is a basis of the most fertile soils. The oldest neolitic agricultural villages originated on loess soil. Field ecosystem is an arteficial ecosystem made by men in order to produce food and other materials. It is not rich at animal and plant species, because these not-bred species are being suppressed, both mechanically (by tillage and dragging) and chemically (by insectisides and herbicides). Some animals, however, got adapted to these ever changing conditions. The most common field inhabitants are rodents, mainly voles Microtus arvalis. The female gives birth to 3 – 10 youngsters a year. Rodents represent food for many other animals such kestrels Falco tinnunculus and buzzards Buteo buteo. Mustela nivalis, fox Vulpes vulpes. Owls often feed on rodens as well. Field ecosystems are the homes for hare Lepus europaeus. Deer Capreolus capreolus and wild boar Sus scrofa, that is able to make much damage namely in corn fileds, also come here to find their food.
