Nature Trail Hvozdnice

The Hvozdnice River Meanders

On this spot, you can assess the erosion of river water that is shallowing bank crash, thus forming curves called meanders, pressing the sidewalk to the slope. The slope is disturbed by surface water and roots of the trees, so in the eye level you can see an interesting profile of the terrace. This place becomes attractive at the expense of security, therefore be careful. You can examine the surface of the carbonic offals from close, that got weathered before the ice ages. Many changes were established during the Quaternary era in the Opava region. The glaciers made valleys and ravines, many of these were filled by loess. These loess were flown by northern winds from the youngest glaciated moraines. The water flows also changed the face fo the landscape. Rivers were cutting into the moraine layers, in some places it washed them to the ground layer, spreading glaciar and river sediments into wide surroundings.

The Scandinavian glacier, as wide as 200m, reached at top glacification to nový Jičín. Of course, that none of these towns had existed then. Ten thousands of years had passed when people left flints and stone tools, that they found in gravel and sand, and started to use these materials to build the nuclear power stations.

In this abandoned sandstone quarry, we can find extensive Ice Age deposits, than are to be found in the floodplains. The sand was mined in many places in Opava and Hlučín regions. Almost every village had it´s own sandstone quarry to stay close to the builders.
