Nature Trail Hvozdnice

Basalt Plates and Shrub Layers of the Riverine Forest

Basalt Plates

The remains of the river gravel can be found on the weathered rocks of the carbonic layers, that were originating in the ages of Saal glaciation 300 thousand years ago. The basalt blocks from Kamenná Mountain were driven here by the glacier drop out into the Hvozdnice river. This is a very attractive geological phenomenon with Paleozoic rocks, covered by river gravel. On the gravel, there are morain layers from sand and clay with various stones transported by the rocks from the Saal glacification. During the oncoming Ice Age, so-called Wurm, the glacier was as high as Warsaw. Loess were aeolianated on the uncovered layers of the Saal glacification. Loess soils were made by the pedogenic processes.

Shrub layer

In the riverine forest, we can find a rich shrub layer. Along the nature trail you could have seen hawthorn Cratageus monogyna, Sambucus nigra and in lighter places blackthorn Punus spinosa. Euonymus europae is noteworthy for it´s purple fruits, named by folk as „priest ´s caps“. Robin, thrush and magpie like very much snapping fruits in late summer. They thus carry the seeds of Euonymus quite far away. These seeds have to stay dormant for 4–5 years and get frozen a few times, until they can germinate again.
