Jankův Pond

Amphibians and reptiles

Amphibians are a remarkable group of animals. It´s name expresses the ability to live in water and on the land. They can reproduce only in water. They lay eggs there, changing into larvae and breathing with their gills. In the adult form gills are replaced by lungs. They have been resisting many enemies for millions years, i.e. fish, frogs, snakes and big insects – larvae of predator dragonfly and dytiscus. In their genome, there is however no protection against chemical water pollution, which resulted in their death in many places. Local newt population Triturus vulgaris is doing very well and Triturus cristatus is breeding succesfully here. Hyla arborea and toad Bufo viridis can be seen here as well. The grass snakes Natrix natrix catch their prey in the warm summer water.

Bats

In the neighbourhood of the Jankův pond, there are bats, feeding on insects. The bat Myotis daubentoniho is hunting just beneath the water surface. 90% of his prey are mosquitoes, the rest are other insects, water insects larvae and rarely fish fry. Bats collect their prey directly from the surface, using its´ long legs, and consuming it while flying. Nyctalus noctulase is hiding in the hollows of old trees from sunshine.
