Riverine Forest

What is a riverine forest

Riverine forest is a particular type of a forest that may be found in the flat valleys of rivers where flooding and groundwater oscilate either regularly or just occasionally. This influences very much the prevalence of the woody species. If the flooding is only temporary and water comes quite quickly back to its place, a so-called hard meadow will occur. That means, as you may guess from it´s name, that there will be woody species with quite hard bark in this forest. In our conditions these are mainly oak trees, elmtrees, ash-trees, hornbeams and maples. Regular and long-lasting flooding are convenient for so-called soft deciduous trees which are the main woody species of the soft meads, such as willows, alders and poplars.

Flora

The riverine forests in the Hvozdnice alluvial plain contain elmtrees (Ulmus spp.), lime trees (Tillia spp.), maples (Acer spp.), poplars (Populus spp.), ash-trees (Fraxinus sp.), etc. We can also notice white willow (Salix alba) or cherry-wood (Prunus avium). Many of flowering plants can be found under the wooden species. You can admire the following plants especially in spring: Ficaria bulbifera, Primula veris, Corydalis cava and Glechoma hederacea. Later on, Stellaria holostea, Ranunculus lanuginosus, and Galeobdolon luteum come to bloom. The bright colours of the flowers in summer get changed by many of the green colours of various meadow grass species.
