Fish farming in Poodří area
Flat landscape with meandering Odra River and its tributaries, system of old river arms, permanent as well as periodic pools and marshes, alluvial forests and meadows is enriched by ponds and pond systems which started arising since middle ages. Fish farming in alluvial plain of Odra River began to develop after Hussite wars when ponds were built wherever it was possible and the conditions allowed it. They were founded by feudal lords, as well as the towns and villages, but also by the monasteries where fish on a plate is a fast meal. Originally, they were supplied by water gates built on rivers. However, an Odra gutter called Mlýnka was built at the end of the 15th century for the purpose of a better regulation of water inflow. It begins in Studénka over a weir and it flows into Porubka in Ostrava. There are 58 ponds in Poodří Protected Landscape Area. Large number of birds is concentrated at the ponds during the spring and autumn migration seasons. Large reedy vegetation offers many opportunities for nesting.
