Alluvial Forest

Basic information

An alluvial forest belongs to the most diverse ecosystems in our country. With a bit of exaggeration, it could be compared to a tropical forest. The main feature of an alluvial forest is the presence of a watercourse or a large amount of underground water in its vicinity. After series of summer rains this area can practically turn into an impassable jungle full of small marshes, climbing plants, insects and birds

Forests

Alluvial forests can be categorised according to the level of effect occasional floods may have on them. In case the sites are often and heavily flooded, we speak of so-called soft meadows. Such sites are typical of willows and poplar trees (the term “soft” meadow was adopted after their “soft” wood). In sites where the floods are shorter and the soil in general is drier and you can find oaks, ash trees, limes and elms there, you have appeared to be in so-called hard meadows.

However, the composition of alluvial forests as known nowadays was influenced by humans and their activity. The forests in Rezavka Nature Reserve represent a complex of elm groves with prevailing English Oak (Quercus robur) and Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior). Small-leaved Lime (Tilia cordata) often occurs here, too. Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) grows in the peripheral bright parts of the forest. Narrow-leaved Elm (Ulmus minor) is one of the severely endangered species in the region.
