Protected Areas

Small-scale Protected Areas There are 10 small-scale protected areas in Ostrava and its close proximity. Polanská niva Nature Reserve represents the one with the highest conservation status. It belongs to Poodří Protected Landscape Area and consists of an alluvial forest and mortlakes of Odra River. Another important site of an archaeological and geological value is Landek National Natural Monument. Polanský les Nature Reserve with protected alluvial forest at the riverside of Odra River also belongs to Poodří Protected Landscape Area. A pond and its adjacent swamps are protected within Štěpán Nature Reserve. An alluvial forest and its plants and animals are the subject of nature conservation in Přemýšov Nature Reserve, Turkov Nature Reserve and Rezavka Nature Reserve where you are located just now. Besides these protected areas we can find three geological natural monuments in Ostrava, the so-called erratic blocks. They represent large boulders made of rocks which otherwise do not occur in our lands. They were transported here by the activity of continental glacier some 250–800 thousand years ago. Erratic blocks can be found as natural monuments in Poruba (the closest one from here), Kunčice and Černá louka.
