Trees in the vicinity of Píšť

Forests

Long before humans started to cultivate landscape actively and to interfere with the native tree composition, the surrounding area of Píšť was covered by alluvial forest, alder-ash and elm-oak stands. Thanks to the agricultural, industrial and mining development in the 17th century there was a higher demand in wood which resulted in large deforestation and change in species composition. Native species – oaks, ash trees, alders, hornbeams and elms were often substituted by fast-growing and easily processible spruce or pines and non-native larch. Fast-growing poplar trees were planted in the alluvial forests. In spite of that there are still places where we can find preserved native species as for example the elm-oak stand in Vlčák forest.
