English Oak (Quercus robur) is a large deciduous tree which can grow to 45 metres. It grows very slowly, however it is long-lived, it can live up to 1500 years. European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) represents one of the hardest woods of the trees found in the Czech Republic. It is used especially for various wooden instruments and in turnery Silver Birch (Betula pendula) is an example of pioneer woody species. It is one of the first species that occupies uncolonized cultural landscapes – forlorn fields or meadows, spoil moulds and dumps. Blackthorn (Prunus spinoza) can be a big shrub or a small tree. Its fruit has healing properties, it tastes astringent and tart, after days of frost it gets sweet – wine or jam can be made from it.
