Lake ecosystem

How does a lake work

Lakes do not represent a natural ecosystem. They were created by man especially for the purpose of fish breeding. Fishpond cultivation in some parts of the Czech Republic has influenced the nature of the original landscape to a significant extent. At the same time it gave a rise to new environment where the original wetlands and waterlogged meadows were enriched by a whole range of plants and animals often protected by law. Water areas also help hold water in the landscape. Contrary to terrestrial environment, stagnant waters are less versatile. The water temperature changes during the year but the changes are slow, more significant temperature fluctuations can occur only in the upper layers of the water column. On top of that water possesses a special characteristic – it reaches its highest density at 4 °C and ice is even lighter than water.

Lakes and rivers therefore freeze at the surface; rarely do they freeze at the ground, which makes it possible for water organisms to survive even severe winters.
