Po vrcholech CHKO České středohoří

Rana

This treeless basalt hill, unlike the neighboring cone shaped hills, is almost 1 km long with narrow elongated ridge and three peaks reaching 457 meters above the sea level. The main peak is located in the middle of the ridge, with the two lower ones on its sides (southeastern, northwestern). But because of the symmetry of the slopes, they all appear as a typical cone. Rana consists of olivinic nefelinit and was formed during a main phase of volcanic activity in the early Tertiary period. Subsequent erosion of the softer sediments exposed the solid volcanic mass. Among the protective elements of this European significant location are grasslands, consisting of precious and protected steppe grass such as Helictotrichon deserterum. Ground squirrel and many rare birds are important species on Rana. One can also find here ground beetles (Polistichus connexus), dung beetles (Sysiphus schaefferi) and butterflies, e.g. swallowtail (Papilio machaon). Former quarry on the southern slope of the foothill disturbs the shape of the almost bare hill nearby a village of the same name. Rana became a favorite place for hang-gliders, paragliders and model planes enthusiasts as they can take advantage of both western and eastern winds. For the glider fans, there is a special airport built near Hradek village. Rana is a favorite tourist place because of its perfect panoramic view of the nearby and distant peaks of Ceske stredohori (Czech Central Mountains = Bohemian Central Highlands) and is located 6 km northwest from Louny town.
