Borec Hill - fauna and flora

The value of living nature on Borec Hill consists in great variety of individual rare species of flora and fauna. Because of the higher soil moisture due to north and west facing slopes, one can find all different plant species in bloom here from spring to late summer. Endangered species include pasqueflower (Pulsatilla patents), dianthus (Dianthus superbus L.), Anthericum liliago L., or summer cypress (Dictamnus albus). A vegetation of deciduous trees, semi-natural dry grass, rock vegetation and other plants such as Cardaminopsis petraea or Dianthus superbus L. can be found on the slopes in higher elevations. Northern slopes of Borec are reinforced by trees such as white birch, small-leaved lime or rowan tree. Only small number of species survives in this specific environment of floating debris, especially those who tolerate increased acidity of the base layer. Even during the winter one can sometimes watch busy life in the middle of sleeping nature, e.g. daisy flowers. Because of the specific microclimatic conditions, some plants resenting temperature below 0°C grow there. Worthwhile of mentioning is liverwort (Targionia hypophylla). Fauna is represented by fire salamander and green toad. Boulder debris´ serve as a shelter to different kinds of bats (e.g. Whiskered bat). Additionally, few specialized kinds of insects such as ground beetle (Pterostichus negligens) can be found here. Carrion beetle (Choleva lederiana) is also a local rarity. Representatives of birds are mainly singers, but one can possibly catch a sight of two birds of prey – goshawk and sparrow hawk.
