Oak-hornbeam forests
Oak-hornbeam forests can be found in the lowest locations, on sunny southern slopes. The European Hornbeam, Durmast Oak and Small-leaved Lime predominate among trees. Grove herbs in the undergrowth include Spring Vetchling, Wall Lettuce, Wall Hawkweed, Pulmonaria officinalis, True Oxlip; more rare species include Arum alpinum, Martagon and Pale-flowered Orchid. In the past, oak-hornbeam forests were used for pasturing cattle and obtaining firewood. This way of forest farming is evidenced by multiple-trunk hornbeams regenerating from stumps (so-called sprout forest).
