The Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area of Jeseníky (“PLA Jeseníky”) covering an area of 744 km2 was designated in 1969. It protects natural treasures and preserved countryside of the Jeseníky Mountains. The Alpine deforested area, mountain spruce forests, preserved beech wood, raised peat bogs and meadows at the foothills are the natural treasures of the Jeseníky Mountains. There are habitats of a number of rare plant and animal species in these biotopes.
History of the town and its surroundings was from its hazy beginnings connected with gold and mining. Spa and tourism-related services were added to the most important business activities in the late 19th century. Schweinburg’s Sanatorium was a sought-after medical institution sanatorium and the region was a famous tourist and pilgrimage site. Zlaté Hory was declared a protected town monument zone on 10th September 1992. This is basically the historical town centre delineated by the crossroads upon entering the Svobody Square and the Church of St. Cross. Ecclesiastic buildings in the protected zone include the hospital Church of St. Cross and parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In the surroundings, there are gold mines and several educational trails: Rejvíz, Údolí ztracených štol (“The Lost Adit Valley”), Údolím Javorné (“Through the Javorná Valley”), Zlaté Hory Mining Educational Trail, Údolská Mining Educational Trail.
Nature protection
The areas of the PLA Jeseníky that are scientifically rarest and of the highest interest for tourists are conserved in the national nature reserves (NNR) of Praděd, Rejvíz, Šerák-Keprník and Skřítek Bog and in 24 other nature reserves and natural monuments.
