Welcome to CHKO Jeseníky

Malá Morávka

We have developed a new information system providing information on wildlife of the Jeseníky Mountains. You can download it directly to your mobile phone at interesting places.

The Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area of Jeseníky (“PLA Jeseníky”) covering an area of 744 km2 was designated in 1969. It protects natural treasures and preserved countryside of the Jeseníky Mountains. The Alpine deforested area, mountain spruce forests, preserved beech wood, raised peat bogs and meadows at the foothills are the natural treasures of the Jeseníky Mountains. There are habitats of a number of rare plant and animal species in these biotopes.

Malá Morávka is the entrance gate to the central part of the Jeseníky Mountains. It stretches across the valley of the Moravice River at the foot of the mountains where a number of original buildings of the Sudenten-Jesenice style have been preserved until today. Various metals, iron ore in particular, used to be mined here. Would you believe that this picturesque village used to be an industrial centre where shafts and iron-mills were built? That the local forests used to be interwoven with roads on which you could have met with carters, miners, iron-millers, wood-cutters and coal merchants? The underground interwoven with tunnels are an important winter habitat of bats nowadays. Several monumental trees that are considerably old have been preserved in the village and in its close surrounding. As far as cultural monuments concern, you can visit the Chapel the Holiest Trinity on the Kapličkový Hill or the parish church of the Holiest Trinity

Nature protection

The areas of the PLA Jeseníky that are scientifically rarest and of the highest interest for tourists are conserved in the national nature reserves (NNR) of Praděd, Rejvíz, Šerák-Keprník and Skřítek Bog and in 24 other nature reserves and natural monuments.
