Lime trees at Floriánek

Lime trees at Floriánek

Above the town, a group of three Small-leaved Lime (Tilia cordata) trees is located at the Chapel of St. Florián. They are about 15 m tall and have girths of 224 cm, 226 cm and 265 cm, respectively. The Chapel of St. Florián was built in Baroque style by Antonín Emerich Horecký, the last lord of the local manor. He had decided to build it at the request of the minister of the parish and the congregation immediately after a great fire in 1716, which had destroyed a significant part of the town, the church and the rectory. The chapel thus became temporarily a place where church services were held. Until World War I, several metal mortars were allegedly deposited here, used for shooting on festive occasions. In 1945, the Rumanian Liberation Army had shelters here from which it conducted bombardments on the retreating German Fascist Army. In 2004, the chapel was restored and was re-consecrated at a festive church service on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the local voluntary fire brigade.
