Short-stalk pastures
Short-stalk pastures have formed and been maintained thanks to the pasture of sheep or cows. Cattle avoid thorny and untasty species, forming typical plant communities which depend on sheep’s hooves gently disturbing the soil and on selective pasture. Among grasses, such as Colonial Bent and Nardus stricta, we can find the medicinal herb Eyebright (Euphrasia rostkoviana), yellow flowering Leontodon hispidus, common selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) and the sturdy Woolly Thistle (Cirsium eriophorum). Pastures are vanishing due to the general decline in pasturage. With them, precious and endangered species are vanishing as well, such as Dwarf Thistle, Mountain Everlasting, the small fern Common Moonwort, Gentianopsis ciliata, Gentiana lutescens ….
