Goethova trasa

Goethe’s Cliff

J. W. Goethe’s frequent travels to the West Bohemian spas are commemorated by a remarkable monument in Aš. Goethe, the poet, privy councillor and geognost, is portrayed admiring a quartz cluster.

Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749–1832)

The first of the two localities on the way to Františkovy Lázně is the nature monument called Goethe’s Cliff. It is a group of rock formations on a thick quartz vein, which is part of the Bohemian Quartz Lode. Due to its high strength, the vein quartz was mined in several quarries, the largest of which operated until the 1960s.

Near the southern edge of the locality, a blue trail marker indicates a turn-off leading to an inconspicuous rock dedicated to Goethe. The boulder has a commemorative plaque, which was placed there by Goethe’s friend J. S. Grüner (1780–1864), the police councillor, amateur natural scientist and collector of minerals from Cheb.
