English Yew in Byčinec
Basic information
The memorable English Yew (Taxus baccata) grows behind the Morávka dam on the field „na Byčinci“ close to the house number 504. The tree was declared memorable in 1991, it is 7 meters tall with trunk circumference approximately 120 cm. This yew is approximately 250 years old.
Matters of interest
The English Yew is dioecious, coniferous, evergreen tree and can be as tall as 20 meters. This tree can live up to 3000 years but the oldest yew was estimated to be 2000 years old. The whole tree except for the red aril around the seed is poisonous and contains the alcaloid taxane. The yew is the darkest tree of all our coniferous trees. It has 20 – 30 mm long pointed and soft needles, the upper part is shiny dark-green, the lower part is light-green and dim. The leaves are lanceolate with no channels, arranged spirally.The bark is soft at the beginning, later peeling off in sheets. The yew is usually a bush or a low tree. Its wood is very dense for its slow growth. It was used to make bows and poisoned arrows, therefore it was almost exterminated. The yew substances are used in medicine to cure the cancer of ovaries and lungs. We can often see yews in parks, where they are often treated by cutting. In current forests, yews can be rarely found as the underlayer of mixed forests. The English Yew was proclaimed the Tree of the Year 2012.
