Obidová Nature Monument
Basic information
Obidová Nature Monument can be found in Krásná na Visalajích parish, on the right side from the red tourist trail leading to Lysá mountain. This area supplies water for the upper flow of the Mohelnice river.
Moors and numerous endangered animal and plant species are present in wet meadows. The Common Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) belongs to highly protected species. It has white blossoms and inconspicious tiny stalk with ground rosette leaves. It grows in soils with low level of nitrogen and thus uses the insect bodies as the source of proteins. Its adenomatous fuzz on its leaves is secreting a sticky substance on which the insect is caught. The Sundew´s enzymes split and absorb the insect´s body.
Matters of interest
Orchid meadows in Obidová Nature Monument are full of rare orchids in spring. The Western Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis) has typically violet-stained and wide leaves, rose-violet flowers arranged in spikes blooming from May to July. This plant, sometimes a half meter tall, is a species highly endangered by extermintaion because of artificial changes in its habitat, drying meadows or excessive soil fertilization.
