The Morávka River

Basic information The Morávka river rises on the side of Sulov in Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains in the height of 880 m above the sea level. This place lies north from Bílý Kříž parish. In Bílý Kříž, there is the state border with Slovakia and the main Europan watershed of the Oder river – the Danube. Its estuary is the Ostravice river in Frýdek-Místek. The Morávka river is 29,6 km long and its catchment area is 142,3 km². Matters of interest The Morávka river belongs to the Baltic sea watershed. Approximately 10 km from its spring, the Morávka dam was built which serves as the source of drinking water and protection against flooding. The river flows through the following parishes: Morávka, Pražmo, Raškovice, Vyšní Lhoty (a smaller part of the flow is distracted to Morávka-Žermanice feeder that ends in Vojkovice in the Lučina river. The river flows then through Nižní Lhoty, Skalice, Nošovice, Dobrá, Staré Město and finally Frýdek-Místek and its estuary is the Ostravice river. Kocuří stream, Vlaský stream and the Mohelnice river are its left tributaries. Lúčka stream, Nytrová stream, Slavíč stream, Lipový stream and Malý Lipový stream are its right tributaries. It is one of the last remains of a mountain river basin almost in original state and that is why protected areas Skalická Morávka Natural Nation Monument and Profil Morávky Nature Monument were declared there.
