Poodří Protected Landscape Area
Fishponds
Basic Information
Poodří Protected Landscape Area was declared in the area of 81.5 km2 in 1991 with the aim to protect precious wetland biotopes in the Oder river floodplain. Poodří is one of few landscapes in the Czech Republic where almost natural water regime can still be found and where the symbiosis between an uncontrolled, naturally meandering lowland river and its alluvial meadows and forests can still be seen These meadows and forests experience floods or innundations several times a year, usually during the spring thaw and after heavy summer rains. The rare nature ecosystems of alluvial meadows, alluvial forests and oxbow lakes cut off from the Oder River and its tributaries are strongly bound to the flood regime.
Poodří PLA has been included as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and is also part of an important bird migration route through Central Europe. Under the Natura 2000 system, Poodří has been declared a Special Protection Area (Bird Area) to protect the kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus), bittern (Botaurus stellaris) and the gadwall (Anas strepera). For the exceptional value of its natural localities, Poodří has also been included among the Sites of Community Importance under the Natura 2000 system.
Fishponds
The first fishponds in the Oder floodplain were set up in the 15th century. Shortly after that a countless number of fishpond networks emerged. Only some of them have remained to this day and in total account to a remarkable number of 57. The fishponds are centralised into several fishpond networks: Bartowovice, Albrechtičky (where you are just standing), Studénka, Jistebník and Polánka nad Odrou. Although they are primarily kept for fishing, especially carps, fishponds play a significant role as a biotope for precious aquatic plants, breeding place for many amphibian species as well important ornithological sites and migration stopovers during the spring and autumn seasons. Many of them also represent an important nesting site. The fishponds of the highest conservational value are part of small-scale specially protected areas such as Kotvice fishpond which can be found in the Nature Reserve of the same name or Bartošovický fishpond that is a part of Bartošovický luh Nature Reserve.
