Memorable trees of Opava and Bruntál Districts

The limes in Karlovice

Basic information

There are two monumental trees – a large-leaved (Tilia platyphyllos) and a small-leaved (Tilia cordata) to be seen here. Monumental limes grow in the centre of the village Karlovice. They were declared memorable in the year 1973. The larger one of them is a large-leaved lime whose trunk is approximately 696 cm wide and its estimated height is 32 m.

Points of interest

Karlovice village was founded in the early 18th century. It is situated on where once used to be Hütten village which ceased to exit together with its mills as a result of the Thirty Years‘War. The traces of the oldest local settlement can be seen in the guarding castles once protecting the routes to mountain crossings. The guarding castle Freudenstein above Karlovice village was founded in the middle of the 13th century. Around the year 1720, iron hammers were established here surrounded by a village named after Karel from Lichtenštejn, the owner of Krnov princedom, as Karlovice (Karlstahl). Iron mills were in operation until the early 19th century when they became unable to compete with Ostrava ironworks. Forestry, timbering, paper production and spa gradually developed in the village.
