Memorable trees of Opava and Bruntál Districts

Lime trees at the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk

Basic information

There are two small-leaved limes (Tilia cordata) growing at the southern edge of Dolní Moravice village, eastwards from the road leading from Dolní Moravice to Velká Štáhle and approximately 250m southwards from the church in Dolní Moravice, at the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. These trees were declared memorable in the year 1999. At that time their estimated age was 150 – 200 years, their trunk perimeter reached 340 cm and their height was 20 m. The trees create a living complement to the cultural monument of the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1751.

Things to note

John of Nepomuk was a vicar-general of the Prague Archbishop in the 14th century. His person played an important role in the antagonistic years between the Archbishop and the Bohemian king Wenceslaus IV. Legend has it that John of Nepomuk refused to divulge a confessional secret of the king´s wife, the queen Žofie, to the king. As a result, he was tortured to death in the year 1393, declared a martyr after than and a saint in 1729. His person is often depicted as a canon with a halo of seven stars holding a cross in his hand, sometimes also a palm branchlet as a symbol of victory. The finger on his lips symbolises the silence on confessional.
