Memorable trees of Opava and Bruntál Districts
Linden of Komenský
Basic Information
A Large-leaved Linden (Tilia platyphyllos) is growing in the park at Leisure Centre in Rýmařov. It is 18 m tall, its trunk is 545 cm wide. It was declared memorable in the year 1993. It was named after Jan Amos Komenský for it was allegedly planted in the year of his birth. A local tailor’s apprentice, Jan Berger, is said to have planted it here.
Points of interest
The crown of the memorable linden is rather thin, drying up from the top. Wood-rotting and brittle cinder (Ustulina deusta), one of the most dangerous fungus for deciduous trees, were spotted in between some of its root sprouts. The fungus infects trees by spores in wounded roots or a trunk. It parasitizes living trees and is able to survive even in dead trees. It causes rot which results in uproots and often in death of a tree.
