Memorable trees of Opava and Bruntál Districts

The oak in Raduň

Basic information

The memorable English Oak (Quercus robur) grows behind the Raduňské ponds system at the brook Raduňka. The tree was declared memorable in 1972. It is 24 meters high, approximately 500 years old with the trunk circumference 630 cm. This oak is considered being one of the oldest in Opava region. The tree has a hollow trunk that was walled by bricks in the fifties of the 19th century and later in 2000 it got modern treatment. The brick walling was removed, the cavity opened and preserved, and dry branches were cut down.

Matters of interest

At the foot of the oak, sporocarps of a rare wood-decaying beefsteak fungus (Fistulina hepatica) were found there. This polypore orange-red fungus is edible and is sometimes popularly called ox or deer tongue. The sporocarps grow on deciduous trees, especially oaks in late summer and in fall. Thank to its appearance it cannot be confused with any other fungus. It is suitable for the preparation of goulash, it can be prepared as a beef tongue or loaded into vinegar. Only young sporocarps are suitable for eating.
