Points of Interest
Bruntál belongs to the oldest towns in the Czech Republic. It was first recorded in so-called Uničov Declaration of the king Přemysl Otakar I. in the year 1223. According to the Declaration, Bruntál was founded around the year 1213. It was the first settlement with Magdeburg municipal law in the Czech lands. It was founded with the aim to secure the up to that time uninhabited part of Jeseníky with its ore wealth for the Czech lands. The most significant historic sight in the town and the entire region is a castle which was built in the second half of the 16th century on the grounds of a former late 15th century municipal castle. The castle belonged to lords of Vrbno. It was built in the Nordic Renaissance style. It was designed in an untraditional way, shaped into a segment with triangle courtyard and arcades. It was rebuilt into late Baroque style in the years 1766 – 1769. Today, it is the seat of a regional museum. There are museum expositions and exhibition halls here where various cultural and social events take place.
