Po hradech a zříceninách Českého středohoří

Vrabinec Nature Reserve

Vrabinec Nature Reserve was declared in the year 1993. It stretches over the area of 8.77 ha at the altitude 198 – 350 m. The area is part of České Středohoří Protected Landscape Area situated over the valley of Rychnov brook and Přední Lhota and Babětín villages. It is a dominant basalt rocky structure consisting of several individual vents. Remains of a former castle built by Lords of Těchlovice can be seen on the top of the hill. The protected area is a mixture of almost vertical walls, free taluses and talus forests with lime and maple trees. Vrabinec creates an isolated isle with xerophilous flora in the colder and moister part of the PLA and a geomorphologic subpart of Verneřické Středohoří. Protected plants such as alyssum (Aurinia saxatilis), St Bernard´s Lily (Anthericum liliago), Leopoldia (Leopoldia tenuiflora) or a beautiful Turk´s cap lily (Lilium martagon) grow here. The endangered species present in this area include a common viper (Vipera berus), a green lizard (Lacerta viridis) or a slowworm (Anguis fragilis). This mostly forested area is an important nesting site for various bird species, especially birds of prey and owls. The proof of a great preservation status of the locality is the occurrence of a drove beetle (Staphylinus latebricola). A common raven (Corvus corax) has been nesting right on the rock for a couple of years. Vrabinec is wrapped in legends which are connected to its caste. According to one, there were three daughters of a chatelaine who were wanted by three sons of a marauding knight of Střekov. The knights conquered the castle but the girls managed to escape by jumping jointly into the Labe River from the rock which was named the “Girl´s Jump” and is situated nearby Vrabinec. Today, the castle and its surroundings are in care of a civic society. An alcove with a visitor´s book has been placed here by the society.
