Memorable trees of Odry District

Great maple of Spálov

Basic information

A great maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) makes an end to a short one-sided alley of eighteen maples along a grassy road which is marked by a green tourist line. The maple was declared memorable in the year 1981. Its trunk perimeter is 451 cm and its height reaches 28 m. There are multiple branches growing from one part of the trunk creating a broad dome crown. In the year 2008 the tree got a treatment. Its dry branches were trimmed, smaller hollows roofed and a large surface trunk wound facing the road was painted.

Things to note

A great maple (sycamore) is quite a massive tree reaching the height of 30 m. It can be found in hilly, submontane as well as montane areas. It is a slowly-growing, long-lived wood which can get 400 – 600 years old. A great maple was traditionally used for making lute fingerboards and ribs – the lute was the main musical instrument in the 15th and 16th century – and it is still used for making violin ribs. It is a great material for production of lathed woody parts such as textile coil and reels, brush handles, wooden household tools and dairy industry, tools used in laundry houses and boxes for transport and storage of foods.
