Polanský les Nature Reserve 4 - The Oder River
Basic Information
Polanský les Nature Reserve lies on the left bank of the Oder River at the north edge of Poodří Protected Landscape Area in close proximity of the City of Ostrava in the cadastral district of Svinov Municipality. The altitude in the Reserve oscillates between 214 and 216 m. Its area of 59,17 ha has been protected since the year 1970. The subject of protection is a large alluvial forest in the Oder river floodplain with a network of old river arms, forest pools and diverse flora and fauna.
The Oder River
The Oder River creates a natural east border of Polanský les Nature Reserve. The river has kept the character of a naturally meandering stream on most of its flow despite several water management regulations such as local stone coverage of the river banks, reconstruction of the largest dams or creation of weirs. There is a nesting site of Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) in the steep clay river slopes. The critically endangered goosander, an aquatic bird of the duck family occurs regularly here. It is characteristic for its long body and a hooked end of its bill. Goosanders most often nest in holes in trees, in our conditions from April to May.
