Polanský les Nature reserve 3 - Fauna
Basic Information
Polanský les Nature Reserve lies on the left bank of the Oder River at the north edge of Poodří Protected Landscape Area in close proximity of the City of Ostrava in the cadastral district of Svinov Municipality. The altitude in the Reserve oscillates between 214 and 216 m. Its area of 59,17 ha has been protected since the year 1970. The subject of protection is a large alluvial forest in the Oder river floodplain with a network of old river arms, forest pools and diverse flora and fauna.
Fauna
Various amphibians find refuge in mortlakes and pools in Polanský les Nature Reserve. Two critically endangered species occur here – Common newt (Triturus vulgaris) and Common frog (Hyla arborea) that can be found at a mortlake in the southeast part of the Reserve. Endangered Common toad (Bufo bufo) occurs and breeds in the south part of the Reserve. There is a regular occurrence of Common frog (Rana temporaria). Another of an interesting critically endangered species inhabiting the area is Lesser Noctule (Nyctalus leisleri). This particular species is dependent on tree hollows where it finds rescue in the summer and winter time. It does not overwinter in underground caves or mines as the other bats do. Concerning the birds of prey, Goshwak (Accipiter gentilis) is observed here regularly
